JAKOB: 40 Rides in 4 months and a new wardrobe

Jakob hadn’t worked out for 15 years prior to his first visit to RideBerlin. His first Ride only lasted 18 minutes… but now 4 months and 40 Rides have passed, and Jakob is one of our top Rough Riders.

What motivated him to get back on the bike and challenge himself again after that first Ride experience? You read it here…

What does RideBerlin mean to you?

On the one hand, RideBerlin gives me the opportunity to disconnect from my day-to-day. I have a very stressful job, that demands a lot of different things from me. At RideBerlin I can disconnect from that within the first 10 minutes and I don’t even have the capacity anymore to think about something other than my Ride. I think that’s amazing. On the other hand, RideBerlin embodies a lifestyle change. I started riding in early October and have felt a major shift in my mind space. I feel stronger, have more energy and I also feel a bit addicted… it organizes my day a little, too. Going to RideBerlin a few times per week means a lot to me. The physical changes, especially the lower part of the body, as well as in the mind, are results of a challenge I gladly take on. I didn’t work out for 15 years and then started coming here. I have noticed that it has also helped me a lot in terms of pants sizes… the way I am able to shop is completely different now. It’s a great experience, for sure, that’s what RideBerlin means to me.

How did you first hear about RideBerlin?

I was brought along! A colleague of mine told me about it and said „Hey, come with me! Just give it a try…”, and so I did. My first time was a Rookie Ride with Johanna… after 18 minutes I was out. At that point I said “never again!”. Then another colleague, who’s also a frequent Rider, ultimately convinced me to give it another go. That’s when I noticed that, yes, it’s hard and very challenging, especially in the beginning, but after four or five Rides I did notice that it was relatively easy to build up that fitness. It’s just a matter of taking it step by step and once you’ve accepted that, it becomes a lot easier.

So the first time you left the room within 20 minutes… and then a few months later you’re at the top of our Rough Rider list for 10 executive weeks…

Yes, that’s true. I have been with RideBerlin for 4 months and have done about 40 Rides.

Wow, that is impressive! What motivates you?

It motivates me, that I am independent, but still have that accountability in a way. It’s not like in a gym, where everybody does their own thing for a bit and then calls it a day… RideBerlin is a concept that allows me to be active in a group, without feeling accountable towards the others, but just to myself.

What I also really like is, that the entire studio is super clean and it’s all well though-out: everything is prepared, as a Rider you don’t need to take care of anything. It’s a huge benefit.

I find the concept very convenient, I don’t need to bring anything other than my work-out clothes – all other essentials are provided. It’s a pay-as-you-go system, no membership where you have to pay a monthly fee… it’s motivation-driven.

What I also very much like are the different personalities of the trainers. I think most of them are really great. There is a trainer for any mood. When I catch a Ride with Vicky or with Fatima, it feels like a treat to myself. And when you sometimes just want to tackle your ‚inner bastard‘, you ride with someone else.

You catch a Ride several times per week. Do you have your regular times?

No, not at all. Sometimes I feel like I am the client of their nightmares. I check the schedule 15 minutes before to see which trainer is on and then I’ll spontaneously decide whether I feel like joining. I have a full-time job and am traveling a lot, so having the option to choose from over 30 Rides per week is very useful to me. That schedule, this flexibility, really works for me.

How would you describe RideBerlin in three words?

Rough. Extremely motivating. Outcome focused.

How has RideBerlin impacted your life(style)?

It has definitely impacted my wardrobe. Quite a lot – because I’ve lost so much weight. That obviously has also affected my confidence and activities. My life has become more active, I feel more relaxed and sleep better. I have more self-worth and enjoy life with more dynamic, more activity. When I visited the Grand Canyon on a recent trip to the USA, I realized that 6 months ago, it would have been much more exhausting. Now I easily walked the 10 km… no big deal.

RideBerlin has taught me to approach challenges in a different way and I like that. The pheromones after the Ride are addictive, it’s adrenaline… and I think everybody should give it a try, at least once.
